Pay-per-click is an form of online advertising that was established in the early 2000’s.

A pay-per-click ad generally consists of a headline, 2 lines of text description (35 characters per line), and a URL. There are no eye-catching graphics or artwork and you have VERY limited space to create the desire to click on your link.

Don’t be fooled by the basic concept! Pay-per-click ads are one of the most profitable advertising methods available on the internet.

These are the ads you see at the top, on the side, and on the bottom of the search engine result pages. For example, these are the “sponsored ads” in Google when using Google Adwords as the  pay-per-click vendor.

These are also the ads that appear on other websites that may, or may not, say “sponsored by Google”.

How do people find your ads?

Potential customers find your ads by typing in a keyword, or key phrase, into a search engine. If your ad is relevant to the keyword or phrase, your ad may be displayed to that person in hopes that they will click on your link as opposed to the competitions. This is where the quality and effectiveness of your ads comes into play, but we will talk about that more in a moment.

Another way a potential customer may find your ad is by visiting another web page. If that web page displays Google ads, for example, and you are enrolled in Google Adwords, your ad may appear on their page a number of times per day.

How much do pay-per-click ads cost?

With pay-per-click, you pay a set amount of money every time someone clicks on your link, whether you made a sale or not. You “bid” on each keyword, or key phrase, to set the amount you wish to pay. If there is some stiff competition for a particular keyword, it could cost in excess of $1-$5 per click, or anywhere from $.01-.50 for less competitive keywords, or phrases.

Don’t be discouraged! If you generate a great ad and target your keywords just right, you can convert over half of the clicks to sales, which means you’ve made a ton of money! You also have the option of limiting the number of clicks your ad gets in a day, so you don’t go over your budget, whether it  be $10, or $1,000 per day.

For example, if you’ve bid $.10 for your keyword and you only want to spend $1 per day, your ad will not run anymore for that day if your ad was clicked on 10 times. That way there is no harm done if you haven’t made any sales that day.

Why does ad quality matter?

Just like any other form of advertising, you’ll want to convince your readers to purchase your product. If your ad isn’t very compelling, you’ll likely see many people clicking your ads, but not making any sales.

You’ll want to write enticing and exciting ads to make sure that your readers want more information and click through to make a purchase! Also, make sure your ads a relevant to your product so you don’t mislead the reader. They will most likely click away from your ad page immediately once they feel they’ve been “duped”.

Making things MUCH easier:

There are a number of pay-per-click software packages and training programs available today that can add value to your business the same day you purchase the product. These programs are designed to boost your ad copy by providing templates and great suggestions for writing the content.

They also provide keyword suggestions and research tools, as well as ways to track your most successful ads and keywords. These trackers are a great way to figure out how well your ads convert to sales so you don’t keep making the same mistakes and actually improve your business instead of of hurting it.

Some software packages even provide tools to spy on your competition, which is a sneaky, yet very lucrative, way of improving your own ads! It’s completely legal, so you don’t have to worry about getting in trouble while increasing the number of sales you make each day!
